Dear Friends in Central Asia,
Allow me to introduce myself as the curator behind Steppe West – an Aussie-based platform dedicated to bridging the gap between the rich cultures of Central Asia and English-speaking audiences worldwide. My journey into the captivating world of Central Asian traditions and stories has ignited a desire to share these treasures with people around the globe who often remain unaware of the wonders this region holds.

With Steppe West, my aim is to act as an English-language publisher and cultural agent for Central Asian voices — helping creators, communities, and organisations share their music, arts, cuisines, histories, and everyday lives with English-speaking audiences around the world.
This is not about extracting content. It is about collaboration, representation, and agency. Steppe West works with you to present your stories accurately, respectfully, and in your own voice, while helping them travel further and reach audiences they might not otherwise reach.
Steppe West is a small but growing team working across Australia and Central Asia. Alongside me, I’m pleased to be working with Erkaiym Turdumamatova, a Kyrgyz contributor based in Kazakhstan, who supports Steppe West through social media, outreach, and day-to-day communication.
For many readers of this page, Erkaiym will be your first point of contact. She helps connect creators, artists, and communities with Steppe West and ensures ideas, questions, and contributions are handled promptly and thoughtfully.
Every piece of content we publish is fully credited to its rightful creator and linked, so audiences can explore further and connect directly.

Your contributions are warmly invited – from music and visual arts to cuisine, nature, history, sports, and everyday life. Whether it’s a heartfelt story, a stunning photo, a short video, or a glimpse into your community, if it can resonate with English-speaking audiences, we want to help share it.
And while we’re focused on publishing in English, we're equally committed to honouring your original languages and contexts.
Alongside storytelling, I’m personally committed to supporting girls’ education across Central Asia by helping provide access to technology. What began with a single donated laptop has grown into a broader mission to bring laptops, tablets, and phones to girls whose education could be transformed with the right tools. In the last quarter of 2025, I plan to formally establish Steppe West as a non-profit to support this work. From that point forward, I’ll begin sending devices to girls who need them — and I would love to hear from those of you who might want to be part of the Central Asia end of this effort, helping identify girls who need support and making sure the technology reaches them safely and meaningfully.

As Steppe West grows, I hope to build a public calendar of concerts, festivals, performances, and cultural events across Central Asia – especially for would-be visitors from around the world. Whether you’re a musician, organiser, or festival director, please consider letting us know what’s coming up.
One of my strongest hopes is that Steppe West will help musicians, performers, and artists reach new audiences abroad – whether through exposure, touring opportunities, or international collaborations. I’d love to do the same for small businesses, artisans, and producers looking to enter or grow in English-speaking markets.

If you’d like to collaborate, share content, explore publishing opportunities, or simply ask a question, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. In most cases, Erkaiym will be the person who responds first and helps guide the conversation.
Together, we can make the stories of Central Asia better known and better understood.
Warm regards,
Pedro
