Bridging Cultures: Steppe West's Invitation to Central Asia

Join us on a journey of cultural exchange and discovery

An Invitation from Pedro

Dear Friends in Central Asia,

Allow me to introduce myself as the curator behind Steppe West – an Aussie-based platform dedicated to bridging the gap between the rich cultures of Central Asia and English-speaking audiences worldwide. My journey into the captivating world of Central Asian traditions and stories has ignited a desire to share these treasures with people around the globe who often remain unaware of the wonders this region holds.

Sharing Stories, Authentically

With Steppe West, my aim is to act as an English-language publisher and cultural agent for Central Asian voices — helping creators, communities, and organisations share their music, arts, cuisines, histories, and everyday lives with English-speaking audiences around the world.

This is not about extracting content. It is about collaboration, representation, and agency. Steppe West works with you to present your stories accurately, respectfully, and in your own voice, while helping them travel further and reach audiences they might not otherwise reach.

Meet the Team

Steppe West is a small but growing team working across Australia and Central Asia. Alongside me, I’m pleased to be working with Erkaiym Turdumamatova, a Kyrgyz contributor based in Kazakhstan, who supports Steppe West through social media, outreach, and day-to-day communication.

For many readers of this page, Erkaiym will be your first point of contact. She helps connect creators, artists, and communities with Steppe West and ensures ideas, questions, and contributions are handled promptly and thoughtfully.

Every piece of content we publish is fully credited to its rightful creator and linked, so audiences can explore further and connect directly.

Content We Welcome

Your contributions are warmly invited – from music and visual arts to cuisine, nature, history, sports, and everyday life. Whether it’s a heartfelt story, a stunning photo, a short video, or a glimpse into your community, if it can resonate with English-speaking audiences, we want to help share it.

And while we’re focused on publishing in English, we're equally committed to honouring your original languages and contexts.

Supporting Girls’ Education with Tech

Alongside storytelling, I’m personally committed to supporting girls’ education across Central Asia by helping provide access to technology. What began with a single donated laptop has grown into a broader mission to bring laptops, tablets, and phones to girls whose education could be transformed with the right tools. In the last quarter of 2025, I plan to formally establish Steppe West as a non-profit to support this work. From that point forward, I’ll begin sending devices to girls who need them — and I would love to hear from those of you who might want to be part of the Central Asia end of this effort, helping identify girls who need support and making sure the technology reaches them safely and meaningfully.

A Calendar of Culture

As Steppe West grows, I hope to build a public calendar of concerts, festivals, performances, and cultural events across Central Asia – especially for would-be visitors from around the world. Whether you’re a musician, organiser, or festival director, please consider letting us know what’s coming up.

Helping Artists & Businesses Reach the World

One of my strongest hopes is that Steppe West will help musicians, performers, and artists reach new audiences abroad – whether through exposure, touring opportunities, or international collaborations. I’d love to do the same for small businesses, artisans, and producers looking to enter or grow in English-speaking markets.

Get Involved

If you’d like to collaborate, share content, explore publishing opportunities, or simply ask a question, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. In most cases, Erkaiym will be the person who responds first and helps guide the conversation.

Together, we can make the stories of Central Asia better known and better understood.

Warm regards,
Pedro

Steppe West is a multimedia platform dedicated to celebrating and sharing the cultures of Central Asia, Turkic, and Mongol peoples through stories, videos, and other creative content for an English speaking audience.

The name Steppe West was chosen to symbolise the mission of bringing the cultures of the vast Central Asian steppes to Western audiences. It reflects the journey of sharing the rich and diverse traditions, stories, and everyday life of the steppe peoples with people like myself in the Western world.

For most enquiries, Erkaiym Turdumamatova is your first point of contact. She supports Steppe West’s outreach and communications and will help direct your idea, question, or proposal. Pedro remains closely involved in editorial decisions and longer-term collaborations.

Steppe West functions as both. We publish curated English-language content, and we also act as a cultural agent — helping creators, artists, and organisations from Central Asia reach wider international audiences through publishing, partnerships, and introductions.

Yes — increasingly, that is one of our goals. As Steppe West grows, we aim to act as a cultural agent and English-language publisher for musicians, performers, artists, and other creators from Central Asia who want their work to reach English-speaking audiences.

This may include publishing and contextualising your work in English, introducing your work to international audiences and partners, helping musicians and performers explore performance opportunities abroad, and supporting collaborations, touring ideas, or festival connections where possible.

We don’t promise outcomes, and we don’t represent everyone — but where there is a good fit, Steppe West aims to help stories, talent, and creative work travel further than they otherwise might.

No. Steppe West does not require exclusivity. You are always free to publish your work elsewhere, collaborate with other platforms, or build your own projects. Our role is to support and amplify your voice — not to restrict it.

Unlike many social media content creators, I see myself as a curator and publisher. Steppe West isn’t about my voice—it’s about yours. My goal is to present your stories, perspectives, and culture in a way that reflects your world authentically, not filtered through my personal views.

While I am indeed a foreigner, my role is to act as your cultural representative to the English speaking world. My goal is to promote your culture authentically and respectfully, without interference.

These are broad cultural and linguistic categories that include many countries and communities. This covers not only Central Asian states such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, but also Turkic and Mongol peoples beyond Central Asia — including communities in Russia such as Tatars, Bashkirs, Buryats, Sakhas (Yakuts), and Tuvans, as well as related groups elsewhere.

Steppe West also welcomes stories from diaspora communities anywhere in the world. If your culture, language, or heritage connects to the wider Turkic or Mongol world, your voice is welcome — whether you belong to a large population or a smaller, less visible community.

I seek content that I can adapt and share with English speaking audiences through Steppe West. Whether you’re a creator, storyteller, or cultural ambassador, I’d love to work with you. Proper attribution and links back to your original work are always guaranteed.

We accept various media types, including text, images, long and short format videos, and music. Platforms include Substack, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Threads, and Bluesky. I am also willing to create accounts on other platforms if necessary to better support collaboration. (Steppe West is also on X/Twitter but has made it a lower priority due to the platform’s increasingly challenging environment.)

Any content that you believe would interest or inform English speakers. This includes cultural stories, day-to-day life experiences, and even political or sensitive stories that you feel should be told. Any attempt to define this further would simply be a list of examples, and even then, it might exclude something unique or important. What you might consider mundane could be fascinating to someone outside your world, so don’t hesitate to share whatever feels meaningful to you.

Steppe West is committed to fostering understanding and respect among diverse cultures and perspectives. For that reason, Steppe West will not publish hate speech, fascist speech, or content that promotes discrimination or violence. If you’re unsure whether your content aligns with these values, feel free to reach out for clarification.

While I already share many posts, existing content often isn’t suitable for English speaking audiences. By working together, we can create tailored content that is more accessible and engaging for an English speaking audience.

That depends on the content. In many cases, a direct translation or an English description will suffice. For videos, adding English captions or subtitles often works best. Ideally, original subtitles can be removed for clarity. Sometimes, additional context—such as historical background or cultural explanations—may be needed for an English speaking audience. I will take primary responsibility for adapting the content in consultation with you, ensuring it remains true to its original meaning and intent.

Absolutely. Language accessibility is a cornerstone of Steppe West. That’s why these pages are available in multiple languages. Some content might be especially impactful when presented in a multilingual format, and elements of the original language—such as audio—will always be retained when appropriate.

Currently, it’s a labour of love with no financial gain. The goal is to foster a global appreciation of these rich cultures, create opportunities for collaboration, and build a vibrant, engaged community. As Steppe West grows, business opportunities may emerge, such as partnerships, sponsorships, or monetising certain aspects of the platform. However, Steppe West will always remain a not-for-profit enterprise, with any financial gains reinvested into its mission or shared fairly among contributors.

Not at the moment. Steppe West is a volunteer-driven project, but I aim to share future financial gains fairly among contributors as the platform grows.

My first goal is to build a platform and brand that authentically represents you and your culture in English. As the following grows, I hope to explore business opportunities, particularly those that create new markets for your work and talents. I also aspire to contribute to education, especially for girls, by providing access to technology. This vision begins modestly—like providing a laptop and phone to help girls in a Tashkent family—but it’s a step toward a broader goal of empowering communities through education and opportunity.

Reach out with your content, questions, or suggestions. Let’s collaborate to share your culture with a wider audience. Contact me by email, messaging app, or through any of the Steppe West social media accounts.
